Giovanni stood beneath the powerful shower spray and vigorously lathered shampoo into his hair.

He must have angered all the Fates. They were forcing him to take the chivalrous route and have Merry share his suite. But what else could he have done? He could not allow an employee to sleep on a floor in a store cupboard, and as for her idea of sleeping on one of the lounge sofas... What kind of impression would that make to their nocturnal guests?

And now he was stuck sharing his suite with the woman he desired more than he could remember ever desiring anyone.

It caused a wrench in his chest to acknowledge that this included Monica.

Giovanni liked to bed beautiful women who lit a flame in his loins but left his heart cold and his brain bored. He would never marry. This was nothing to do with misplaced loyalty to Monica’s memory. Monica was dead. She wouldn’t know. If by chance there was a heaven and she was sitting up there in it, watching him, she wouldn’t expect him to spend his life pining for her. Monica would want him to live his life.

To marry, though, meant making a lifetime commitment to one woman. It was a commitment that should only be made if you loved that person and couldn’t imagine yourself without them. That was how it had been with Monica. And then she’d died and ripped a hole in his heart so big and painful that he would never put himself in a position to feel that way again.

It had taken the move to Switzerland for him to reach the point of living again. The career path he’d then embarked on had opened the doors on a new future, one he’d enthusiastically embraced. He travelled the world making pots of money, ate the best food, drank the best drink, and bedded the most beautiful women. He woke every morning raring to go. He took risks. Listened to his gut rather than to his advisors—Wolfgang excepted. He lived his life on his terms and under his own control.

So why could he not control his desire for Merry?

And why, when he knew how damned imperative it was to prevent himself being alone with her, had he invited her to share his suite? He wouldn’t have made the invitation to anyone else.

Only once he’d dried himself did he realise that in his haste to escape her presence he’d locked himself in the bathroom without a change of clothes.

He cursed. Clothes were a barrier he needed around Merry Ingles as much as he needed distance.

Securing the towel around his waist, he took a deep breath and unlocked the door.

The suite was empty.
